3.1.1 Safe to install
Discovering concealed metal objects behind walls has become more accessible with the use of your phone's magnetic sensor. This application specializes in detecting ferrous metals, such as iron and steel, by measuring variations in the magnetic field measured in microteslas (µT). It proves effective for identifying metal studs, nails, screws, pipes, and other magnetic materials.
How It Works:
The application utilizes the built-in magnetometer found in most smartphones to assess the magnetic field around it. Upon startup, the app automatically calibrates to establish a baseline for the surrounding environment. Real-time readings are displayed, with deviations from this baseline indicating the presence of magnetic objects.
Examples of Detection (Relative to Baseline):
- Empty air: ~baseline (10–60 µT)
- Nail or screw: +5 to +20 µT
- Coin or small metal piece: +20 to +50 µT
- Pipe or screwdriver: +50 to +100 µT
- Metal stud (in wall): +80 to +150 µT
- Strong magnetic source: +150 to 300+ µT
Features:
- Real-time µT readings
- Adjustable sensitivity slider
- "Hold" button for freezing current values
- Options for automatic and manual calibration
- User-friendly and intuitive interface
The application functions without an internet connection, enhancing its versatility in various environments.
Tips for Better Accuracy:
- Remove any phone case or metallic accessories during use.
- Avoid electronic devices while calibrating for optimal readings.
- Position the back of your phone near the top for best results, as that is typically where the sensor is located.
The calibration process saves the current µT value as the baseline. If elevated readings are detected even without nearby objects, it may indicate that the sensor requires time to stabilize—especially following exposure to strong magnets.
This app is particularly useful for:
- Locating metal studs behind drywall
- Detecting hidden screws or nails
- Scanning for magnetic fields around electronic devices
Embrace a sense of scientific curiosity as you explore your surroundings!
